Gallstones are composed of important substances such as cholesterol, billirubin, and calcium. Gallstones is a result of imbalance of substances in gall bladder and precipitate as gallstones. Gallstones was found in people with hyperlipidemia, eating food with high cholesterol habit, more women than men, age between 40-60 years, and often found in people having chronic haemodisease such as Thalassemia.

Do you have following symptoms?

• Tight stomach, flatulence, indigestion, a lot of gas
• On and off pain at midrib or right costa-border with queasy symptom
• Serious stomach ache may cause back pain, fever, queasy, vomit and may be yellowish skin and eye.

How do we examine to find out gallstones?

• Examination by pressing and feeling pain at the right costa-border and may be yellowish skin and eye for gallbladder constriction case
• Radiative examination
  • Abdominal radiation is finding gallstones 33-48%
  • Ultrasound is widely acceptable in general

Treatment

Operation is worldwide acceptable because the other treatments; for instance, medicine and gallstone pulverizing by high frequency sound wave (ESWL); are not workable.

Two Methods of Gallstone Surgery

1. Abdominal Open which is normal operation
• Advantage:• The operation can be performed at any stages
• Limitations:
  • It is painful and must be admitted about 5-7 days and 2-4 weeks recovery period before getting back to work.
  • The operating cut is big and long scar
    
2. Operation by Laparoscopy insertion through small cut around the navel and showing the screen on the monitor and insert a few equipments through a few small cut size 0.5 – 1 cm. for the operation.
   • Advantages :
     • The patients get less hurt than the old method. Admission is only 1-2 days and getting home within 5-7 days.
     • Leaving only very small operation scars.
   • Limitation
     • The Laparoscopy cannot be done in some stages of gallbladder inflammation, serious or pus stage, including some patients who had upper abdominal operation before, for instance, perforated operation.
